The Box League Weekly Update!

Welcome back to another weekly update Eagles! We’re now coming to the end of week 4 of this rotation and things are getting feisty!

There are now only 4 weeks left in this rotation folks, plenty of time to get your games in, but it’s time to start thinking about getting started if you haven’t already!

in Box 2 Paul Wynne has already played all of his games following 2 more this week. Unfortunately both ended in defeats, first to Taso (3-0) and then to Jonny (3-0). This leaves Paul with enough points to claim 2nd place, but he won’t be holding his position for long I fear. All it would take is for any of the others below him in the box to play each other and the victor would instantly jump above him. Paul will undoubtedly be turning his attention to club champs and very much pouring every effort into reaching the finals!

Box 3 sees its first game of the rotation, with a victory for Brian over Edith in a 5 game thriller! Edith managed to take the fist 2 games relatively comfortably, but ultimately fell to Brian after 2 very close games and a tie breaker that went Brian’s way. There are some very big names in this box and both Edith and Brian will be fighting hard to maintain position! Perhaps having peoples focus directed on club champs could play to their favour!

In box 7 Archie leap-frogs Scott to take 1st place after a 3-2 belter against Garry Wotherspoon. The newcomer isn’t far behind him however, with a victory over Scott already recorded, he has every chance of chasing Archie up to the finish line in 4 weeks time!

In box 9 the running order is starting to become apparent after Angela takes another win, this time over Janine (3-1), putting her well clear of Hugh in 2nd place. Hugh is making every effort to stay on Angela’s heels however, recording a 3-0 win over Paula to keep him in 2nd place, but his game in hand will not be enough to catch Angela yet. It’s going to be the games against Angus and Gordon that define the results of this box! Alex is also making himself known and is definitely not out of the race for a promotion spot, with 2 games in hand and some interesting matches coming up, he too could be the wild card that topples Angela’s reign at the top!

Box 10 also finds itself in a very interesting situation. Ann has taken a 3-0 win off of Raghbir, meaning that now all of the currently active participants have played each other, and the probable final positions have been made clear. Ann is currently 3 points clear up at the top, with Elisa in 2nd place a comfortable 5 points ahead of Raghbir, and Bal in 4th 4 points behind Raghbir. With all 4 now only needing to play the remaining 2 players in the box, it could all come down to who gets their games in and who doesn’t. But if all games are played, it’s really now just a battle for 2nd place as Ann sits comfortably in an unassailable position in the promotion zone!

The Box League Weekly Update!

The games have started flowing folks! The lower boxes have properly gotten into their stride and are starting to get interesting!

Don’t forget to sign up for Club Champs 2019 on Sporty HQ! latest entry is 3pm Saturday 20th!

Elisa is making a dramatic entrance to the mixed boxes with a pair of wins over first Bal (3-0) and then Raghbir (3-0), taking her to 1st place and 9 points clear of the rest of the pack! I can see plenty of opportunity though for the rest of that box, and 1st place is by no means guaranteed for the newcomer!

Angela gets herself off to a similar flying start in Box 9 with another win, this time against Alex (3-1), but with points to her opponents for the games she dropped, things are even more up for grabs there. In particular I can’t see Alex being content with 3rd place! It’s gonna get feisty!

The real upset so far is in box 7, where Scott flying high off of his win against Mr Ramsay thought he’d have an easy time of it! It was not to be though, with another newcomer, Garry putting him right in his place with a 3-2 victory! Archie Niven also stakes his claim to position in the box with a win over David Naylor. So far Scott is hanging on to 1st place thanks to the 2 games he took off of Garry, but it’s by the fingernails! Both Garry and Archie are going to be gunning for that top spot, and with a game in hand each, Scott is going to have to pull something special out of the bag!

Angela is back! Can she be stopped?! This time with a 3-2 win over Paula, taking her an incredible 12 points clear at the top of the box! The only thing now separating what was left behind from Angela’s storming rampage to the top of the box is that both Paula and Hugh managed to take 2 games from her before she ran off into the sunset! Can any of them catch up?! Hugh is certainly making a go of it, a 3-0 win against Janine keeps him within touching distance of Angela, but both of them have some tough matches ahead!

Robyn is once again picking up points, this time leaving Alaisdair by the wayside, in a 3-1 victory making it clear that she won’t be pushed aside easily as she keeps on charging towards the top boxes and a proper challenge!

Box 10 is getting interesting! The tussle for second place has begun behind Elisa with Ann taking a 3-1 win over the newcomer (goan yer sel Ann!) and Raghbir bounces back from his defeat against Elisa to take a 3-0 win over Bal. The extra game played keeps Raghbir a point clear of Ann but things are definitely going to be interesting going forward!

Archie Niven is making it clear that his win over David was no fluke, taking an other win, this time a 3-2 slog against Scott. Scott must be starting to feel that shoogly peg wobble as Archie comes racing up behind him. Scott is going to need the wins in his 2 remaining games to keep himself relatively comfortable!

Box 2 is getting interesting too with Mr Treon beginning to pull ahead of the pack after taking a 3-0 win from Jonny. Craig Bennet throws his hat in the ring, with a 3-2 thriller against Mr Wynne, this pulls him up to share 2nd place in the box but with a game in hand he certainly has the advantage. This one could just come down to who gets their games played in time!

In a crushing blow for me, Ben takes first blood in Box 4! if it weren’t for the fact I managed to salvage a game i’d be distraught! Nonetheless Ben takes the lead in Box 4 while I trial behind with my 2 points!

Spoke too soon! It’s not over yet this week for Box 10! Ann clocks in a 3-0 victory over Bal to take her just 2 point shy of the top spot and with a game in hand. This is going to be a tight box!

The Box League Weekly Update!

Another happy week in the box leagues!

With 11 matches played this week its been a frenzy getting everyone’s reviews on the games! I’m seeing a lot of people thoroughly enjoying the competition and a lot of drive from people to continue on up the boxes and to start playing for the Monday and Wednesday night league teams!

This is your 2 week warning folks! Boxes 3, 4 and 7 I’m looking at you in particular!

Box 10

Raghbir makes good use of his powerful serve to take a win over newcomer Steph (3-0) in her first ever box league match (welcome to the boxes!)Steph still has some work to do on her volleys and retrieving the ball from the back of the court, but these are things that will come with time. She says that as long as she got past Raghbir’s serve she got on OK, so there are definitely some positives there to build on!

Alex takes his first win of the box leagues from Janine in a tense set of matches marred by strokes and contentious points (3-0). Alex definitely needed to work hard, with Janine chasing a clean sweep through Box 10, but eventually the hard work paid off. Janine took consolation from the fact that at the end of the game Alex looked like he’d run a mile, while she was her usual cool, calm and composed self! Alex will be hoping to come to terms with real game situations like scoring, strokes and lets, but these will come with time!

Box 9

Richard takes his second game of the rotation, this time against Angela (3-0). Angela knows Richard is a hard player to take on, with difficult serves and quick tempo making it difficult to get into a good rhythm. Angela will be focusing in future on claiming the points from her own service points, capitalising on taking control of the tempo of the match.

Peter takes another win this rotation, this time against Angela (3-0) to move him to within grasping difference of the top spot, and well into the promotion bracket. After getting his serves under control, and realising Angela’s drop shots would be the end of him, Peter managed to focus on applying his massive bank of power and forced Angela to the back of the court. Angela acknowledged the effort, saying she struggled to return anything hit at pace to the back of the court, most of her points coming straight off of the serve. The rest of the box will need to focus on their play from the back of the court if they want to overtake Mr McGowan now.

In a disappointing start to Ann’s rotation, Jaime takes a win (3-0) over last rotations star of Box 10. An claims she was slightly out-classed by the new-comer, but her own performance was fairly consistent. Jaime is looking forward to climbing the boxes and getting stuck in to some properly challenging matches.

Box 8

Archie shows off his front-of-the-court prowess once more, this time against Sophia, taking a tidy 3-0 win. Archie is becoming the one to beat in this box with Scott sitting within reach at the top of the box, taking down Archie will be the first step for most to make their own way upwards!

Like father, like daughter seems to be the case this rotation (exempting the youth, agility and good manners of course 😉 ), as Scott also seems to be unstoppable in Box 8. This time it was Sophia who couldn’t keep up with the improving Scott’s shots (3-0). He claims not to have played very well despite the score, not being able to find his length effectively and resorting to keeping things simple and playing the shots that would keep Sophia on her toes.

Box 7

Box 6

In a tough, physically demanding match for both players, Alaisdair eventually comes out on top with a win over Ben Anderson (3-2). After the first game to big Al Ben’s assessment was that he would need to rally before the next (his pun not mine, though don’t think i’m not jealous). Ben managed to battle through to take the 2nd fairly easily as Al’s fitness looked to be flagging. A 3rd game given away by unforced errors and strokes put Al under pressure, but seemingly not enough! Al came back to take the next 2 games as Ben just couldn’t keep up! Definitely an opportunity missed for Mr Anderson, who’ll be hoping for a rematch soon to even the score!

Putting her unstoppable mix of youth and daily practice into action, Robyn takes down another of the hardened players in Box 6. This time it was Russell that fell to Robyn’s agility (3-1). Keeping Russell moving and carefully choosing her shots left Russell with very few options. Can anyone stop this girl?!

Box 5

In a disappointing result for this rather dashing young reporter, Adrian takes the biscuit in a 3-0 win that does no justice to the effort involved for both players. Adrian’s fast, low, cross court drives to the forehand were of such a consistent width and quality that every single loose shot was destroyed instantly! I’m going to have to work hard in the future to keep my drop shots lower, too many balls hanging right in front of the front wall at perfect striking height gave the game away. A great match though, I’m very much looking forward to the re-match!

Box 4

Box 3

Box 2

In the first match of the rotation for Box 2, The craigs squared up to get the measure of each other! It was Mr Bennet that came away victorious (3-0), bringing his win/lose margin against Mr Rothnie up to +1. In a signature comment on the game, he relates it was a fun game, though it probably wouldn’t have been if he’d lost. Fair to say Mr Rothnie will be aiming to make their next head to head less fun for Mr Bennet!

Box 1

The Box League Weekly Update!

Welcome to the weekly update! It’s been a very active week down in the lower boxes, with some new faces making dramatic leaps to the top! With no games yet played in boxes 2, 3, 4 & 7, this is your 3 weeks left warning! Get playing Eagles!

Everyone is looking forward to the Open this weekend, and who can say if the extra practise this week will make the difference!

Box 10

Alex vows to increase the variation in his shot selection following a defeat to Raghbir (3-2). With Janine reigning supreme in Box 10 at the moment, this could be the win Raghbir needs to challenge her, at the very least he’ll be hoping it’s enough to secure second place! Still plenty of time left though!

Janine claims her first victory of the rotation over Claire (3-0). Claire claims she’s been out of practice for some time which contributed to the defeat to an on form Janine, she’ll be looking to regain some confidence over the next few games and come back swinging! (get it?)

In what is becoming the standard for Ms Thomson she takes another win, this time against Ragbhir (3-0). Janine left Ragbhir in the dust this time, with well placed serves and determination in the 2nd game when Ragbhir made a comeback. Could this win be the one that keeps her closest challenger in check?

Janine continues to dominate at the top of the box with a 3-2 win over Esme! In a fun match between the pair, maintaining the tradition of being extremely close, Janine takes the biscuit this time with focus on her serves. Esme reflected she needs to focus more on anticipating Janine’s shots and aiming for the back of the court more often to force Janine off of the T. Can anyone stop this woman?!

Box 9

Jaime takes his winning streak a step further with a nice victory over Paula (3-0). After taking a game to warm up Paula got into it and gave Jaime a really good match. Paula seems to have up’d her game under the careful scrutiny of coach Allan, just a shame he left at such a crucial moment!

And once again Jaime takes a victory to cement his place at the top of the box, this time over Angela (3-1). Dropping only one point in the first game Angela knew she was in for a tough one! She managed to get a game under her belt but couldn’t hold back the tide. The cheeky banter from the new comer may have been a distraction for Angela with accusations of laziness flying about I’d certainly understand! The rematch will most definitely be one to watch!

Angus makes his entry into the rotation with a nice win over Paula, who was saving herself for a competitive match later in the day. With this win Angus keeps himself in contention for the top stop in Box 9, He’s not going to just let Jaime run away with it!

Peter came off the back of his defeat to Jaime, to take a well deserved win against a (to be fair) injury impaired Angus (3-0). Angus is hoping for a rematch some time soon, he needs more time to get used to the shear power Peter can put behind the ball! With this win, Peter keeps himself in contention at the top end of box 9, on-wards and upwards from here!

In a very close game with Jaime, Richard makes his debut to the rotation, winning 3-1. Richard claims Jaime was playing extremely well, but managed to finally put a stop to Jaime’s triumphant march through box 9! After taking the first game Jaime lost out on 3 game points in the 2nd paving the way for Richard to gain momentum and sweep up the next 2 games.

Box 8

In this epic of a game, Scott takes a victory to a very much on form Neil (3-0)! Scott claims to a large number of mistakes particularly on the drop shots, giving Neil a lot of opportunities to rack up the points and take the lead deep into the 2nd and 3rd games. Re-focusing and keeping the ball long and narrow to the wall kept the games falling in Scott’s favor however, leading him to victory! All he needs to do now, is keep that focus in every game!

In a great game against Archie Niven, Scott manages to pull off a crucial win to maintain position in the box (3-1). Scott was forced heavily on his length game to keep the youngster out of the front of the court where almost every single one of Scott’s drops were being picked up. Hard low cross-courts and a steady return of service kept Scott on top though. Highlight of the match – not a single sweary word from Mr McAlpine! (I know right! how?!). Archie is reported to be seriously (well not that seriously) considering using his smaller stature to his advantage next time, and cut off Mr McAlpine at the knees! #watchyourback!7

Box 6

Match number 2 in box 6 goes to Mr Anderson, with a nice win over Stewart Ramsay (3-0). Stewart had nothing but praise for Ben’s great control of the pace of the game, leaving him time to find his length and make it very hard for Stewart to play a winning shot. Ben puts thee win down to his improved fitness and decision making when it came to shot selection. Although an absolute gent, Ben needs to watch his back! Stewart claims the after-match games went his way, making the preceding defeat murder-inducing! ye be warned!

Robyn continues her victorious strides up the boxes with another win, this time over Ben Anderson (3-1), who came in confident off of his win over Stewart earlier in the week. With Robyn’s commitment to getting to every single shot and continually improving her shot selection and control, Ben struggled to keep up. According to Ben it was still a very enjoyable match and although getting steamrolled in the 2nd (15-5) was happy to come away with a game under his belt. Can anyone stand in this girls way!?

Box 5

I finally manage to break my losing streak folks! In an extremely tight set of games against Mr Andy Cramb (3-1). With nothing more than a 3 point difference in every game, it was a battle against Andy’s precision and my freakishly long lunges! thankfully long skinny legs still count for something in this crazy world!

Box 1

Paul v James (3-0)

The Box League Weekly Update!

Welcome to a brand new rotation folks! Things are already off to a great start with games all over the place! With the Open coming up at the start of March this is a great opportunity to get in a few extra practice games to hone your skills before the big event!

Box 10

Its a good start for Angela at the front end of this rotation with a 3-1 vicotry over Ms Paula Dillon. Paula took the first game which got Angela worried, but the pressure seems to have done wonders and inspired her to take the next three games in quick succession. Angela says there were a lot of good rallies, and even points won off the serve! go you!

Jaime v Peter (3-0)

In a match between two first-timers to the box leagues Jaime takes his first steps to glory through a victory against Peter McGowan (3-0). This was the first competitive game for both players and they’ll definitely have come away with some things to work on. Peter in particular is determined to be focusing more on keeping his serves in to avoid giving away cheap points. Looking forward to seeing how these to get on as the rotation continues.

Box 8

In the first game of the rotation for Box 8, Neil takes the first steps towards victory with a hard match against Sophia (3-2), who managed to take the first 2 games but let the match slip through her fingers as Neil struggled back. With some great rallies making up a very enjoyable match, this’ll be one Neil remembers for a while! Plenty of time for Sophia to take the top spot off him though!B

Box 6

In a profanity laden first match for Box 6 Robyn manages an epic 3-2 win over Alaisdair, luckily according to her father it’s nothing she hasn’t heard before (phew!)Robyn took the points by exhausting her older opponent by moving him around the court as much as possible and playing the safe shots consistently. She’ll have her sights on the top spot so watch out Box 6!

Box 5

In the first weekend of the new rotation Ed Doyle places his sights firmly on the top spot in box 5! With a glorious win over myself (3-0) where Ed’s fast, low, long balls were just too consistently perfect width and kept me in my place! It was then straight into a 3-1 slog with Adrian which puts Ed firmly in prime position ahead of his well deserved holiday this week! The match against Adrian looks to have been one of the closest I’ve seen! 4 games, 2 tie breaks, and the other 2 with no more than 3 points difference! Adrian will be looking for revenge soon I’m sure!

Box 1

Finlay v Paul (3-1)
